“Game of Thrones” Notable and Unusual Cameos

David Benoff’s Parents
Season 4, Episode 1: “Two Swords”
Game of Thrones gets its share of A-listers with name recognition, but David Benoff, the co-creator and show runner, has been known to slip in friends and family, too. In the season 4 premiere, Benioff cast his parents in as a pair of random villagers. Benioff’s father, Stephen Friedman, was the former head of Goldman Sachs, former Chairman of the New York Federal Reserve Board, and a member of the George W. Bush administration.

George W. Bush
Season 1, Episode 10: “Fire and Blood”
Speaking of George W. Bush, HBO and Co-Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss got in a bit of hot water when fans spotted what looked like the severed head of George W. Benioff and Weiss released a statement about the president’s head on a stake: “The last head on the left is George Bush. George Bush’s head appears in a couple of beheading scenes. It’s not a choice, it’s not a political statement. We just had to use whatever head we had around.” Bush’s likeness has since been scrubbed of all defining features, but the original footage still exists out there.

Will Champion, Drummer For Coldplay
Season 3, Episode 9: “The Rains of Castamere”
Will Champion’s memorable cameo is in arguably the most talked-about scene in the entire GoT series — the Red Wedding. Champion, a massive Game of Thrones fan, was there for all the bloodshed, happily banging away on his drum. Champion got to team up with Game of Thrones again in 2015 for the Red Nose Day musical which raised more than $21 million for a number of charities.
